APPLICATION === SUMMER 2008

As of March 12, 2008, our online application system is not functioning properly. To APPLY for this workshop, send an email to csmith@ctbp.ucsd.edu with 2008 CTBP Summer School App in the subject line and the following information in the text of the message or as attachments:

Workshop Organizers:

Michael Holst, Mathematics, UCSD

J. Andrew McCammon, Chemistry & Biochemistry, UCSD

Applications are invited for CTBP’s 2008 Summer School, to be held on the UCSD campus in La Jolla, California, from August 11 through August 15, 2008. The school will focus on theory and computational methods for multiscale modeling and simulation of biological systems from the molecular to subcellular levels. Particular topics to be included are continuum models of solvation including Poisson-Boltzmann and newer variational methods for integrated treatment of polar and apolar interactions, Brownian dynamics simulations, fully-continuum models of diffusion including Smoluchowski and Poisson-Nernst-Planck, and applications of these methods. Mornings will typically include lectures by experts in these areas, and afternoons will include computational tutorials and time for work on individual or collaborative projects. The level of the course is intended for graduate students, postdocs, and more senior scientists with some experience in biological physics, but dedicated newcomers will benefit as well.

Description:

The workshop is designed primarily for people with graduate-level training in the physical sciences (e.g., physics, physical chemistry, mathematics). Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops, but they will not be required. Training workstations will be available in a computer laboratory. Wireless access will be available 24/7 in the housing complex and computer laboratory, but not necessarily the lecture rooms. Very limited computer/laptop support (OS, wireless networking, etc.) will be available during the workshop.

Location & Format: The Summer School will be held on the campus of the University of California-San Diego, in La Jolla (a coastal community about 15 miles north of the city of San Diego). The school will include a series of morning lectures on theory and applications, then tutorials and hands-on activities in a computer laboratory in the afternoon. There are limited campus and walking-distance shopping and dining in the community surrounding the campus. There is regular public transportation (bus service) to downtown La Jolla (1-2 miles) and La Jolla beaches.

Registration/Housing/Meals: There is a $100 registration fee for all invited participants. CTBP will provide housing and meals (without cost) to all invited participants. Funds permitting, we may also provide partial travel awards to some invited participants. Participants will be housed in single apartments, and meals served in a dinning hall in the same campus apartment complex. School lecture halls and computer labs are a short walking distance from the apartments/dining hall. Typically, there is an off-site barbeque dinner and evening activity (for which there is a cost) for all participants on the last day of the workshop. Additional details will be provided during the workshop.

Participant Selection and Notification: Prospective participants must register online by May 15, 2008. Applications will be reviewed and invitations to accepted participants are sent no later than June 7, 2008. Invited participants will then have 10 days to respond, after which time their invitation is voided and offered to the next applicant on the accepted, but unfunded list. In addition, invited participants must remit their registration fee by June 28. Only checks (personal, USPS money order, Western Union, cashiers, etc.) made payable to "The Regents of the University of California" will be accepted for payment of the registration fee. This workshop will host 30 invited participants. Keep in mind that not all applicants are accepted. Persons who are not invited, may participate in the workshop at their own expense, provided space is available (contact Christopher Smith, csmith@ctbp.ucsd.edu, for space availability, and to convey your desire to participate).

Prospective Local Registrants (no housing provided): Please apply through the online registration form AND contact via email, Christopher Smith (csmith@ctbp.ucsd.edu). The later is extremely important. We have found in prior workshops/schools that meal times provide very productive opportunities to discuss research and instructional content with presenters and fellow participants. We will attempt to provide meals (without costs) to our local participants, but we need to know who you are and that you wish to have lunch with the other participants.
