Q&A:

1. As of today, how many parallel computing computers are there?
Due to the large number of parallel computers, it is hard to say exactly how many of them exist. To see some of the fastest parallel computers, see http://www.top500.org/lists/2003/06/

2. Relative to desktop computers, how fast are parallel computers?
Ideally, given the same processor is used for both the desktop and parallel computer, the parallel computer should run number of processors times faster than the desktop.

3. Can I get an access to a parallel computer?
Yes, see NPACI website http://www.npaci.edu/Allocations/

4. How much do parallel computers cost?
Depends on various factors – number of processors, memories, etc.

5. Is my program/code dependent on what platform or type of parallel computer that I am on?
Absolutely. If not, the program will not run efficiently or not run at all.

6. Can I build my own parallel computer?
Yes. With everyday home computers and softwares such as Rocks, you can build your own parallel computer. For more information on Rocks, click on the Software section.

7. Can I take a tour of SDSC?
Yes. See http://education.sdsc.edu/Outreach/index.html

8. How do I apply for processing time?
See http://www.npaci.edu/Allocations/

9. Are supercomputers vulnerable to hacking?
As long as you’re connected to the internet, you’re vulnerable to hackers.
